Writing Equations on Our Blogs!

THIS DOES NOT WORK ANYMORE!!

I installed a script that will allow us to write equations on our class blogs.

In order for text to show up as an equation, simply put a $ on each end up what you write. For example, if you want

1/2 x^2 + 3x - 7 = 0 to show up as an equation put a $ before the 1/2 and another after the 0.

Ex. $1/2 x^2 + 3x - 7 = 0$

The equations will not display properly when you preview your post, but if you Publish the post it will show up. If you publish, but made an error, you can click the Pencil icon to edit your post.

This explanation is very basic. If you want to get very fancy with your equations, you can read about it here. The programming language we are using to enter equations is called LaTeX. You may explore this more in depth if you care to, but it is not necessary.

Mid-May

Hi! I hope things are going well with everyone. It has been a bit of crazy month for me with different PD events and Sanctions. I don't have any more planned adsences from school this year!

Physics 20 We are just finishing up Optics. Our exam for that will be Tuesday, May 17. The review answers may be found here: PAGE 1 PAGE 2

After Optics we are looking at Sound. We will try an inquiry and collaborative approach to this unit! Let's see where we end up!

Math B30 There is a Math B30 Sequences and Series Exam coming up too. On Monday, May 16 we will write the Practice Exam. The Practice Exam answers are HERE
On Wed., May 18, we will write the actual exam. The review answers are on the Review Sheet.

On Tuesday, we will begin Matrices! Matrices is a new concept that you have never seen before. It is a powerful tool to solve equations in more than two variables!

Physics 30 We are partway through the Electricity unit. We have a ways to go before our next exam. We are just watching our amazing Prezis on electricity applications now!

Math 10 We are partway through the unit on Functions. We are about to start graphing lines. Pretty quick we will be looking at slope!

U of S Physics 30 Contest

Here is the link to the U of S page that has old example contests. Here

Scroll down to the heading "2011 University of Saskatchewan High School Physics Competition." Beneath that, you will find the old contests.

Good luck! We are writing it on Wed., May 18.

Physics 30 Upcoming Exam

We have another Physics 30 exam right around the corner!

The Work, Power, and Energy exam will be Tuesday, April 19.
We will write a Practice Exam in class on Friday, April 15. The Practice Exam answers are found HERE. There will be no quiz.

The answers for the multiple choice section of the review are found HERE. The other part of the review is the Work, Power, and Energy Practice Assignment. You can find those answers HERE.

Here is an applet you can experiment with to aide your understanding of Energy. CLICK HERE The applet has a skateboarder and you can create the track/halfpipe that s/he travels in. To see the energies you can turn on a Pie Chart and/or a Bar Graph. Notice that at the top of the ramp all of the energy is Potential Energy. At the lowest point all of the energy is kinetic. What does this same about the speed at each point?

Good luck and have fun!

Physics 30 Exam

Here are a couple of applets that may help with the studying.
Law of Universal Gravitation: HERE Try changing the distance between the objects to see what it does to the Force. Try changing the mass too!

Forces including the frictional forces: HERE In this applet, keep increasing the applied force until the object begins to move. You can then decrease the applied force and it will continue to move. Why is that? What is the relationship between kinetic and static friction? If you increase the object's mass, what does that do to the necessary applied force?

The exam will be on Thursday, April 7. The topics covered will begin at Newton's Laws. The other topics covered are Gravitation, Mass/Weight, Friction, Free Fall, and Momentum. You can find the review answers here: PAGE 1 PAGE 2

On Monday, April 4 we will write a Practice Exam in class to assess if you are ready for the exam.

Please, if you are having any trouble at all, see me immediately! I want to be able to help you prepare for the exam, but please, don't leave it to the last possible opportunity.

Good luck!

Robot Rumble!

Last week a couple of students and myself went to the SIAST myRobot Rumble in Saskatoon. It is an event hosted by SIAST and allows students to build small robots and then also program how the robots will operate. The computer programming is the main component in the competition because all teams start off with the same robot components.

Here are a couple pictures from the action!

Our robot just pushed the competition out of the ring!
The mean machine

The competition takes place in March and the teams are registered in January or February. Next year it would be great to send a couple of teams!

If you want to check out the robots in action come and talk to me.

Over the next little while

Unfortunately, I will be out the classroom for a few days again. I will be away Thursday, March 24 until Tuesday, March 29 (inclusive).

Over this time I am going to experiment with a new twist on evaluation. We are going to try using Practice Exams. In Math 10, Math B30, and Physics 20, you will receive a review to work on at home AND in class time you will complete a Practice Exam. This Practice Exam will be very similar in format and content to your actual exam, but the Practice Exam will be a little bit shorter. The Practice Exam will be completed in class and corrected together. You will then be able to see what areas you need to focus on to do well on the actual exam. If you take the Practice Exam seriously this will be a great self-assessment tool! We will usually write the actual exam a few days after the Practice Exam to give you time to review and receive help.
